Hunting Island State Park is a beautiful Lowcountry beach vacation spot that takes you through terrain resembling rain forest, with ferns and fronds, palmettos and broad-leafed plants. The beach itself is mock South Pacific, a narrow strand hard up against a sheltering grove of pines and palmettos. Hunting Island State Park is one of the most popular state parks and beach areas in South Carolina that attracts over a million visitors a year. The pristine sandy beach, natural setting and warm Atlantic Ocean make a perfect getaway. Hunting Island is not just another beach; it's a nature and wildlife paradise in South Carolina. Located 16 miles east of Beaufort, SC on US 21, this popular park is a large secluded barrier island with a historic 1859 lighthouse as its centerpiece and a semi-tropical abundance of plants and wildlife. The Hunting Island Light is the island's third lighthouse and open to the public. Campgrounds contain 200 campsites, cabins, picnic area with shelters, lighthouses, surf fishing, boardwalk, nature trail, nature programs, interpretive center, park store, fishing pier (seasonal), crabbing (seasonal), and ocean swimming (seasonal). A limited number of campsites may be reserved. The remaining campsites are rented on a first-come, first-served basis. Each site has water and electrical hookups and is convenient to hot showers and restrooms. Cabins are completely furnished, heated, and air-conditioned. Picnic shelters may be used without charge or reserved in advance for a nominal fee. Hunting Island got its name when the island was once used for hunting deer, waterfowl and raccoon. Hunting Island, as well as Beaufort, was a common layover for sailors and pirates, including Blackbeard. In the 1930's, the Civilian Conservation Corps built the State Park. Hunting Island has remained very conservative with the natural environment, but that does not mean you have to rough it. There are showers and dressing rooms on the beach.
Hunting Island is also a popular nesting ground for the Loggerhead turtle and the park has a hatchery for the study and preservation of the species. The weather is nice most of the year and the cool Atlantic breeze keeps the summer heat at an enjoyable level.
